of the Roosevelt papers for that document. Mr. Shipman reported that after a thorough search he was unable to find the letter in question but that the files did indicate that such letter was received by President Roosevelt and subsequently forwarded to the State Department and thereafter to the Navy Department and that there was no record of its return from the Navy Department. Miss Tully was thereupon requested, with the permission of the President, to make a search of the papers still at the National Archives in the custody of the President to locate the letter in question. The original letter was not found but Miss Tully did obtain from the State Department a copy of a letter dated April 16, 1941 to the President with the notation "(Original signed by J. A. Moffett)". In the first paragraph of that copy reference was made to an attached memorandum covering the situation in Saudi-Arabia. Mr. Shipman found among Mr. Roosevelt's papers an original unsigned memorandum dated April 16, 1941 which appeared to be the memorandum referred to in the copy of Mr. Moffett's letter. A copy of that letter furnished to Miss Tully by the Department and the original unsigned memorandum dated April 16, 1941 were forwarded to the President by registered mail under date of April 21, 1947. Thereafter, on April 29 1947 the Executors received a further request from President Truman to cause a search to be made of the Roosevelt papers for all letters and documents relevant to -5- |
