DEPARTMENT OF STATE WASHINGTON July 24, 194) I had a long visit with the Apostolic Delegate Friday afternoon. His reaction to the Pope's statement regarding the bombing of Rome was that it was intentionally moderate and phrased so that it might not be used by the Nazis or Fascists to the disadvantage of the Allies. He believes that the Pope will continue his efforts which he has exerted for a long time to persuade the Government to remove everything of a military character from Rome. He does not believe that the possibility of the Holy Father being a medium for the removal of Italy from the war is at an end. Myron Taylor |
