large crowds of people lined the streets on the President's route to
the station and applause greeted him along the way. The President's
train departed Rockland at 4:30 P.M., enroute to Washington. Mr.
Adelai Stevenson, Special Assistant to Secretary Knox, boarded the
train at Portland for a short conference with the President in
connection with the Kearney Shipbuilding Plant.
The train bearing the President and the remaining members
of his party arrived at Union Station, Washington, D. C., at 10:30
A.M., E.S.T.
