     I replied that I had of course no communication with you on this subject; but that I felt
that you would not wish to visit the sins of the father on the children and that your invitation
would stand.
     I went on to say that on the other hand several serious problems now arose.  If the King
had ordered his army to betray its Allies he doubtless had done so after a previous agreement with
the Germans with regard to his personal life.  The King might now be on his way back to his
Palace in Brussels and might desire to have his children join him and although he had forfeited by
his action of treason all rights as a King he still had humane rights as a father.
     At this point the Belgian Ambassador interrupted me to say that yesterday evening shortly
before the news had
