I followed his eyes. A platoon of Japanese troops and
an officer were swinging down the road toward the camp, singing
a marching song. Rumor in the camp had it that this group had
guerillas. We soon saw that the rumor was correct. The platoon
marched in military order up to our stockade and halted on an order
from the officer. Then they impaled a gory Filipino head on a tall
fence post near our gate.
This obviously was a subtle warning against any infraction
of our prision rules. We were soon to learn that it was not an
empty threat.
