the factory generally more attractive by the re- moval of unsightly dump heaps, the planting of trees and grass plots, the setting out of park benches, the construction of swimming pools and sport fields (the latter being done in collaboration with the Sport Office of Strength through Joy). Beauty of Work also interests itself in the living conditions of hotel employees as well as in the crews' quarters of sailors on German ships. A report published late in 1937 claimed that up to that time the Office Beauty of Work had been responsible for the building of over a thousand workers' club houses, 3,000 canteens and rest rooms, 3500 factory parks, 200 swimming pools, and l, 500 wash and locker rooms. It is stated that living conditions had been improved on 3,000 barges and inland waterway vessels and on 324 ocean-going ships. It was estimated that as of 1937, RM 600,000,000 had been spent by factories on the objectives of Beauty of Work. It is stated that since that-time the improvement of working conditions has become such a generally accepted fact that it is no longer possible to record the expenditures statistically. One of the collateral activities of the office is the campaign for the "Beautification of the Village" which is directed toward the removal of dump heaps and outdoor manure piles, the sprucing up of |
