Internship Opportunities

The internship program at the FDR Library has evolved into a unique educational experience for students of varied backgrounds and interests. Internship opportunities include the development of educational programs and materials for students and teachers of all grade levels; computer projects to help streamline the research process; public relations; archival research; the development of exhibits; and a variety of other activities.

Students who have interned at the FDR Library over the past few years have had the opportunity to work with the "raw stuff" of history. They realize and appreciate the rare privilege that is theirs to work with the same materials as have well known historians such as Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Geoffrey Ward. Roosevelt Library interns have gone on either to the work place or to pursue advanced degrees in a variety of fields. Their experience at the Roosevelt Library has broadened their historical perspective, and given them an opportunity to work in the creative process of history, while encouraging them to learn more about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The Library offers internships for credit year round, and a limited number of paid internships in the summer. Interns are chosen by an application process. Current undergraduates, recent graduates, and individuals pursuing advanced degrees are encouraged to apply. For information write to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, 4079 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY 12538 or e-mail us at roosevelt.library@nara.gov.

ROOSEVELT ARCHIVAL INTERNSHIPS

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (FERI) offer Roosevelt Internships to college and graduate level students. Preference may be given to students majoring in history, political science, archival, library, or computer/information science. Research skills, basic computer skills, familiarity with the Internet, and knowledge of Windows, Word, and Access database software are particularly valuable. Some familiarity with the history of the Franklin D. Roosevelt presidency (1933-1945) is helpful.

Roosevelt interns work at the FDR Library as part of a team of other interns and staff professionals to organize and automate archival materials, make indices, finding aids, and databases, digitize documents and photographs, and assist with other archival and museum projects. The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00.

Internships can last up to eight weeks, and must take place during the Summer break (mid-May through the end of August). The FDR Library is in Hyde Park, New York, a rural/suburban town 80 miles north of New York City. Interns receive a stipend of $250 per week. The internships are funded by the William R. Emerson Archival Internship Fund and by the FDRL/FERI Internship Program, both of which are managed by the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt institute.

The next deadline for applications is April 15, 2004.

If you have any questions, contact Lynn Bassanese (internship coordinator) for the FDR Library at (845) 486-7741 or by e-mail at lynn.bassanese@nara.gov.
