their ordinary line of duty with the subjects on which they lecture, as for instance race or economic policy, and who therefore give their services free to Strength through Joy. Private teachers are persuaded by the professional organization to which they belong to contribute their time at very low cost (RM 2 per hour being the fee offered a school teacher brought in from his regular job to lecture at a Volksbildungsstatte). Records show that out of 6,787 teachers associated with the Oflice, 74.8% gave their services entirely free of charge, 23.5% worked for a small nominal fee, whereas only 1.7% were employed by Strength through Joy on a full-time basis. With respect to the visits' made to the plants, which play a large role in the work of the Office for Popular Education, the factory owners can of course easily be coerced by the Labor Front to throw their plants open to inspection by visiting groups, and to provide the necessary guides. While the Strength through Joy authorities state that the work of popular education is still only in its initial stage, they regard the following statistics for attendance during the year 1937 as quite an accomplishment: |
