THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 28, 1939. MEMORANDUM FOR HENRY T. HACKETT I do not object to this increase in assessment from $1,400 to $8,000, covering the new stone cottage on Dutchess Hill, but at the same time I think we should ask for a reduction of the assessment on the Dumphy farm, which was greatly increased during the period that Mrs. Backer owned it. Also, it should be noted that the easterly half of the Jones place was sold to Mrs. Backer and that that half included the old house and barn. My part of the Jones place consists only of about eighteen or twenty acres of very rough land! If you think well of this, will you let the Board of Assessors know on the second Tuesday of August?
