                    Dear Mr. President,                     
 
                                                            
 
 
A telegram has just been received from General Headquarters 
      in India requesting that the following message should be conveyed 
           to you from General Sir Archibald Wavell: -      
 
                                                            
 
 
"I deeply appreciate confidence placed in me which I 
      will do my best to justify. I fully realize the difficulties 
      and dangers ahead but I am confident that they will be overcome. 
      I am on my way to my new command and I will inform you as soon 
              as it is possible to establish heads."
