PARAPHRASE OF PELEGRAM RECEIVED FROM: AMLEGATION, Cairo TO: Secretary of State, Washington. DATED: April 20, 1944, noon U.S. URGENT FROM LANDIS FOR THE PRESIDENT AND THE SECRETARY OF STATE. CONFIDENTIAL AND PERSONAL Last night King Farouk insisted on calling on me in secret at my home in order to discuss the political crisis which has arisen in Egypt. The King has been endeavoring to get in touch with me ever since last Friday; however, I was on a visit to Iran. The King provided me with copies of his communication to the British Ambassador and the verbal reply from Mr. Churchill which the British Ambassador had given him. The King also stated that it is his determination to bring to a head the issue between the Prime Minister and himself even though it might result in the exile and forced abdication of the King. The reply of Mr. Churchill sates that the question is to be considered early in the week by a special. meeting of the War Cabinet. In this reply the King is requested to refrain from any violent action in the meantime. The |
