Attached herewith is the citation proposed by the Joint Chiefs
of Staff for the award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal
to Field Marshal Sir John Dill. It is suggested that you release
this with some such personal comment as the following:

I am deeply distressed to learn of the death of Field Marshal
Sir John Dill whom I regarded not only as a great soldier but
as a most important figure in the remarkable accord which has
been developed in the combined operations of our two countries.
In developing his loss and expressing our sympathy to his Government
and to his widow, Lady Dill, I have recited the award of the
Army Distinguished Service Medal to him, with the following citation:
                                "

                      William D. Leahy

                       Admiral, U.S. Navy,

                      Chief of Staff to the

Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy.
