C. 5 November, 1944 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT: Attached herewith is the citation proposed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Field Marshal Sir John Dill. It is suggested that you release this with some such personal comment as the following: I am deeply distressed to learn of the death of Field Marshal Sir John Dill whom I regarded not only as a great soldier but as a most important figure in the remarkable accord which has been developed in the combined operations of our two countries. In developing his loss and expressing our sympathy to his Government and to his widow, Lady Dill, I have recited the award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal to him, with the following citation: " William D.
