The opinions of Messrs. Davis and Graham provided the only opportunity to reach a settlement on the "maintenance of membership" policy of the WLB., giving the worker the right of choosing whether he would become and remain a member of the union under changed conditions--i.e-, under , maintenance of membership" conditions--involving a continuing penalty in case of lack of "good standing" in the union, which is only invoking the democratic principle of "freedom of choice".- The Company has merely accepted what Messrs. Davis and Graham said in their opinions as to the rights of the employees be put into the contract and implemented so as to avoid future disputes which can only be a disruptive influence and seriously impair oduction, the maintenance of which is the ultimate goal of a Why the union should fear the effect of this is beyond me. Does it mean that they fear adverse action on the part of the workers? That is hard to believe, so insistent has been their claim not only of majority control but of almost unanimous control of the workers. My urgent advice is that the WLB and the union accept the situation and sign the contract at once. I think delay injures their interests. The Company has yielded a great deal, due to the emergency of war. They should take it before the present favorable situation deteriorates. |
