DEPARTMENT OF STATE Washington LONDON September 8 1942 MEMORANDUM FOR MYRON C. TAYLOR While in London, it is suggested that you take occasion to discuss with the British Foreign Office the British Government's attitude towards the Vatican. Among other things you may wish to ascertain what the reaction of the Foreign Office has been to the recent rumors that the Vatican will be used by the Axis in the near future to support, peace proposals. Do the British believe that the Pope would lend himself to a maneuver of this character? Since you go to London after Rome, you may, of course give the British the benefit of your opinions in the light of your recent, visit to the Holy See. C.H. |
