Milk and vitamin distribution no. 2
DISTRIBUTION OF POWDERED MILK AND VITAMINS DONATED BY "AMERICAN
RELIEF FOR ITALY", THROUGH E.N.D.S.I. TO THE ORPHANAGES AND SIMILAR INSTITUTIONS
IN NAPLES.
On Thursday February 1st the E.N.D.S.I. office for the distribution of
Milk and Vitamins to the Orphanages in Naples was set up in the Offices of
the E.N.D.S.I. Warehouse No.1951 in Via SS.Apostoli Naples.
The newspapers had already advised the institutions of the coming
distribution but on February 2nd when the distribution began very few people
presented themselves. It was explained that very few read the daily press,
As the private telephones did not function some difficulty was experienced in
sending word to the Orphanages.
A personal visit was therefore made to the orphanages in various parts
of the city to warn them of the distribution and to ask them to pass on the
word to the nearby institutes.
After many had already withdrawn their vouchers there were still many
who had not called. Two lists were made of the missing institutes and an
Italian Red Cross car and an E.N.D.S.I. car were sent to leave a written note
at each one.
By Tuesday, February 6th, practically all the Orphanages, Foundling
Hospitals, Children's Hospitals and Sanatoria had received their vouchers: 54
Orphanages and 8 Hospitals.
Continual contact was kept with the Public Welfare Sub-Commission of A.C.
Captain Codrington was most helpful and provided the list of Institutes. As
the 0rphanages were already receiving 25 gr. of powdered milk per child per
day the supplementary ration given by E.N.D.S.I. was of 20 gr. instead of 40
gr. as in Rome, where the institutions do not receive a dried milk ration.
The Public Welfare Sub-Commission and other Offices of the Allied
Commission expressed their satisfaction at the help given by "American Relief
for Italy" through E.N.D.S.I. It was regarded as a providential distribution.
Mgr.Marena and Doctor Giuseppe Parlato (Italian Red Cross), both members
of the E.N.D,S.I Committee for Naples were most helpful.
The Children's Hospital received, as in Rome, special allowances of
Protein Milk, Dextri-Maltose, and the various A and D, Ascorbic Acid and
Brewers' Yeast tablets. The Director of the Foundling's Hospital, Professor
Vaglio, and the Directors of the other Children's Hospitals came personally
to express their gratitude for the considerable help given, which was- as
they all assured us - vitally needed.
(Mr. John Patrick Carroll-Abbing) for E.N.D.S.I. Medical Commission.
