Dear Mr. President: I am transmitting herewith copy of a letter dated September 23, 1944 which I have today received from the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, enclosing a check for five hundred thousand lire as an initial contribution to the cause of national relief in Italy. I would like to call your special attention to the paragraph referring to the most helpful assistance given by the Civilian War Relief of the American Red Cross to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta during the period before the entry of the allied troops in Rome.
