HENRY T. HACKETT ATTORNEY & COUNSELLOR AT LAW 226 UNION STREET POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK Nov. loth, 1937. Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt The White House Washington, D. C. Dear Franklin' I now have the deed to the Dumphy and Hughson farms executed by all of the Newbold Trustees ready to be recorded. I acknowledge receipt of yours of the 9th instant containing check to my order as attorney for $1,960.50 to purchase land from Wright. I shall proceed as rapidly as possible with this matter. Most of the land owned by Devens is high enough so that any ordinary rise of water will not affect it. Later it may be necessary to exchange land with him. Englehardt told Mr. Welch of the Trust Company yesterday that he was leaving Gus' place Friday, Novamber 12th, for Purdy, Westchester County. Welch is going to have the furniture moved to Poughkeepsie and stored so that it will not be stolen during the winter. I will arrange for an extension of Rohan's lease for another year. Hicks has a lease covering the Dumphy farm until April 30th, 1938 so that I do not think that Moses should disturb him until his lease expires unless he consents. I also acknowledge receipt of yours of the 6th instant containing your check to my order as attorney for $12,000. toward the purchase of the Dumphy and Hnghson farms. I have just written to Mrs. Backer to ascertain the name or names in which she desires to take title to that part of the Dumphy farm lying east of Violet Avenue. There are two questions to be settled in reference to the land to be conveyed to Mrs. Backer. First, the width of the road along the north line, and second, whether or not you intend to reserve the right to back up and flood any of the land to be conveyed to her, and if so, to what depth. The present road is about twelve feet wide. The gateway on Violet kvenue is twelve feet in width from the south face of the stone wall on the north line to the north face of the stone wall running along the road. The bridge is twelve feet three inches in width over all and the roadway eleven feet four inches between the rails fastened on each side.
