      On October 1st, the French
 
      Ambassador at Madrid gave to His Majesty's Ambassador a message 
      from M. Baudouin for communication to His Majesty's Government %.
 
      The message was to the effect that
 
      
 
 
if the French Government was not to be driven entirely into 
      German hands, Great Britain must let supplies pass from the French 
      colonies to unoccupied France. If these supplies were allowed, 
      the French Government would be prepared to accept any necessary 
      supervision and would give a guarantee that neither supplies 
      nor their equivalent in France would be seized by the Germans. 
      If the Germans made an attempt to seize them, the French Government 
      would be defeated and then France would be once again united 
      with the United Kingdom against Germany.
 
      
 
 
In communicating this message, the French Ambassador said 
      that he was chiefly interested in eradicating anti-British feeling 
      that was again breaking out in France, and making it possible 
      for France and Great Britain to continue on the same road towards 
      an ultimate victory. His Majesty's Ambassador told him that he 
      also was only interested in winning the war, and that he was 
      not going to recriminate with him over what had happened. For
