Naval.
Monitor bombarded Dunkirk docks on the night of October 15th-16th.
Naval Patrol vessel sunk off the East Coast on October 15th,
4 casualties and 2 suvivors.
Further information received regarding the naval operations in
the Mediterranean referred to in paragraph 1 of my telegram of
October 13th reveal that H.M.S. "Ajax" sighted 3 (not
2) Italian destroyers on the night of October llth-12th and sank
two of them outright. Later she sighted a cruiser and 4 destroyers,
I of which she damaged, the other ships disappearing in the darkness.
On the morning of October 12th H.M.S. "Ajax" and H.M.S.
"York" located damaged destroyer ("Artigliere"
of 1620 tons completed in 1937). She was in tow of another destroyer,
but this at once slipped tow and escaped under a smoke screen.
The crew of "Artigliere" then abandoned ship, and when
they had done so, the "Artigliere" was sunk by gun
fire. As the ships were in the vicinity o~ air bases and the
sea was calm survivors were not rescued but their position was
reported en clair by W/T.
