Oct. 8th, 1930. Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hyde Park, Dutchess County, N. Y. Dear Franklin: Last week Mr. Luckey notified me that your Secretary had telephoned him to direct me to begin an action against the owner of the car which had destroyed your Ford Cabriolet. I immediately looked up the report of the accident filed in the Sheriff's office and wrote Tom Lynch to verify the name and address of the owner given in that report. I then got in touch with the representative of the Insurance Company and had the Sheriff obtain for me the correct license number, and again communicated with Tom Lynch to verify the name and address of the owner of the car. I am enclosing herewith a copy of the report of the accident made by Monfort Snyder to Mr. Mack, the representative of the Insurance Company insuring your car and an extract of Snyder's report to the Sheriff's office. Also a copy of the statement made by some colored people who were passing after the accident, which they left with the Sheriff. From the few facts I have been able to gather, I believe that the owner of the other car will probably make a counter claim and in that event you will have a real law suit on your hands. As I am not a trial lawyer, I think it would be wise for you to have Edward A. Conger, who is in charge of Mr. John E. Mack's office, take charge of this matter for you. With kindest regards, I am Yours very truly, Henry Hackett |
