worth the life of your son, or of anyone else's son? Perhaps
I am not well informed of the terrifically vital forces underlying
all this unrest in the world, but for the life of me I cannot
see anything involved which could be remotely considered worth
shedding blood for.
Whether men already immersed in the heat of quarrel will accept
our counsel and our aid, we cannot tell. We can only hope that
reason will carry the day, and that we will be able in all good
faith to help all of those who are in such deep trouble as to
feel they must fight their way out. For we shall have to stand
for judgment before our children and their children for the manner
in which we require the world's affairs just now.
The contemporary verdict on Bishop Seabury was that he was
a great organizer and a strict churchman. That is a good enough
verdict for us, I am sure. May we all, when we come to the end
of our lives, merit as good a one--as deserved a tribute to careers
devoted to persistent loyalty to conscience and to God.
