2) Anti-malarial work. There were 26 anti-malarial stations in
southern Italy and 3 mobile malarial control units working in
cooperation and under the orders of the Health Department, Ministry of
Interior.
3) The Red Cross operates a visiting nurses' organizations in the
larger cities throughout Italy. The city is divided into zones with a
volunteer committee being responsible for a zone. For example, there
are 22 zones in Rome with voluntary operating committees using 200
volunteer visiting nurses.
4) Nursing Service. There are 610 graduated volunteer nurses in
liberated Italy. THe nurses are graduates of Red Cross operated
nursing schools approved by the Department of Health , Ministry of
Interior. 261 nurses are operating in preventoria , sanitoriums and
public hospitals and 394 in refugee camps.
5) Warehousing and Transport. IRC has operated:
(a) Bulk warehouses and has a system of warehousing with some
experienced employees. Although a major portion of their warehouses
have been requisitioned for military use they will become available
shortly.
(b) Transport services are serveraly interrupted but the basic
organization and garage services remain in a reduced state.
(c) Ambulance service. Although there were 760 ambulances in service
in southern Italy, at the present time there are only 82 ambulances in
operating condition and 100 additional unusable because of lack of
tires and repalcemant parts.
6) Refugee service. The entire health program of the refugee camps is
the responsibility of the Italian Red Cross. Operated in conjunction
