gown caused the Protestant ministers to dress in similar long gowns. Abuse of the
clerical gcmn has already taken place, German soldiers and Arrow Cross personnel
having made use of its protective value. There have also been sporadic
instances of priests being insulted, mainly by drunken soldiers. Thus, for
example, the deputy of the Prince Primate in Budapest was searched amidst aimless
revolver fire, his valuables taken and his secretary slapped, in another case, a
priest was beaten up because he protected women and refused to turn over the
sacramental wine. But, as I have already mentioned, the priestly jown constitutes
such an excellent safeguard that priests who dress in civilian clothes are
seized and dragged away as suspicious persons.
3. About the Prince-Primate we know little since the front around
Esztergcm is still in movement. The city af Esztergem itself has allegedly '
changed hands several times. There are rumors both to the effect that His
Eminence has been placed under house arrest by the Hungarian Nazis and that his
Palace haa been sacked by the Russians. Janos Drahos and Gyula Matrai have
been beaten up.
4. The Bishop of Szekhesferhervar died as a result of the bombings and
the Bishop of Rozsnyo as the result of illness.
5. The Hungarian Government at Debrecen has carried out the promised land
reform, according to which, in all probability, the whole of the church's wealth
will be sacrificed. (Stet). Under the leadership of Beresztoczy and Banass
negotiations are in course with the object of modifying the execution of the reforL
6. In order to protect Catholic interests in new Catholic party (christian
Democratic People's Party) is being organized under the democratic banner. The
leader is Count Joszef Palffy. The party will work with completely new forces
and methods adequate to be identified with the old, mistaken, outmoded christian
party. The terrain is vary favorable for the new party. Great masses in both
towns and villages are disillusioned with communism the more so because the
Russians, who called themselves communists, which everyone believed, pillaged
the people everywhere and, through habitual raping of their wives and daughters,
made anti-communists of even those who had awaited the arrival of the Russians.
The people of the villages are fed up with the great land cymers and the other
seigneural Catholic leaders because they spoke of Christian Socialism and papal
encyclicals and their words remainted empty. This social dissatisfaction justified
the new party in its effort to bring about more radical reform and real
and integral solutions. This does not mean that the new party would like to
partition the holdings of the Church but will attempt to save what can be
saved in the chaotic situation created by the announcement of the execution
of the new land reform. I believe hat they wanto to introduce shortly the
Soviet Khalhoz system on the excuse that small people are getting land. This
is happening under Soviet pressure. The Provisional government continues to
prevent the official organization of the new party. they appear to recognizethe
new party's claim to existence in principle but in practice do not permit
the party to organize officially. Negotiations are now in progress in Debrecen
