to overcome these difficulties, Joszef Palffy found strong support
in the Kalot movement, which is well organized in the provinces, and in
the fact that the most recent behaviour of the clergy has created a favorable
public opinion. All priests remained at their posts so that the
clergy were the only ones from the intellectual class Which remained with
the people.

7. In those towns and villages which were fought over, ecclesiastical
buildings (churches, schools, convents) suffered much, The greatest damage
was done in Buda: The Garrison Church, the Sigismond chapel together with
the Royal Castle, and the church of Taban have been completely destroyed;
the Coronation Church, the parish church at Kristinavaros, The Franciscan
parush church at 0rszag-ut, the Kapucin Parish church in Fo-utca, and
the Church of the Erzsebet nuns have been seriously damaged. In General,
the Var itill, the quarters of Krtstinavaros, Taban, and Lower Viziraros
rare in ruins. In Pest the damage to ecclesiastical buildings is much
less. At Eszergom the Basilica is also in ruins. A similar fate has
befallen the churches of Szekesfehervar, which changed hands eleven
times. From various villages it is reported that many times only the
church has been damaged. This is explained by the fact that the Germans
out of a curious preference placed munition and manks next to the
churches. At Buda it happened that the Germans put their munition trucks
inside churches (for example
the Garrison Church) and used the church towers as observation posts. The
Germans also profaned the Coronation church by bringing their horses there,
dirtied the High Altar, while the Chapel of the Miraculous Statue of the
Madonna was used as a W.C. They wrapped their sick in sacramental vestments,
not only here, but also in the Sigismond Chapel. Naturally, they carried
away all of the more valuable Church jewelry. Then the Russians came and
finished the work of vandalism.
