problem will be in the north of Italy, normally the most productive part,   
but we know it will be one of great magnitude due to the prolonged and   
ruthless enemy occupation. Italy is still our battle ground, white crosses   
here and there like sentinels, mark our struggle here, mark   
the valor of our crusaders. What they have earned for you and me and the   
cause of liberty can only be appraised by generations to come. We are too   
near it in time but know they gave their all for America. They could give   
no more. Your generosity glorifies their sacrifice here. It exemplifies   
what American magnanimity means. It helps to raise a stricken foe. In that   
act alone no finer example of Christian charity, not as a code of morals   
but American in action, can be found. Who shall say that this is not   
justice tempered with mercy.
