Telegram from London dated October 23rd
1. Naval.
At 2.30 a.m. on October 22nd His Majesty's Canadian destroyer
"Margaree" (ex H.M.S. "Diana") on passage
to Halifax was in collision with 10,000 ton merchant vessel about
450 miles west of Ireland. Thirty-two survivors are on board
the merchant vessel and it is feared that "Margaree"
is a total loss.
Three naval trawlers were sunk by mines in home waters during
the night of October 21st-22nd.
The Italian destroyer sunk in the recent Red Sea action was the
"Findcesco Nullo" (1058 tons) completed in 1925.
2. Royal Air Force.
During the day of October 22nd on Blenheim, sent to attack military
objectives in Dutch ports, reported having obtained a direct
hit on the bows of a cargo vessel of about 1500 tons off The
Hague.
All projected night operations were canceled on the night of
October 22nd-23rd owing to weather conditions.
3. German Air Force.
Night of October 21st-22nd (further reports).
In the London area casualties so far reported amount to 56 killed
and 181 wounded. Two serious fires were reported but both were
under control the following day.
At Coventry some storage sheds were gutted at the Armstrong Siddeley
works (the aero engine factory reported damaged in yesterday's
summary); the water tower collapsed and water mains burst.
