German Air Force.
Night of October 17th/18th (further reports.) Total casualties
in London area are estimated at 97 killed and 365 injured. Reports
from Birmingham that no serious damage was caused to any of the
"key" factories hit but that it was heavy among working
class houses.
Damage at a London Underground Railway Station mentioned in paragraph
3 of telegram of October 17th was serious and it is anticipated
that clearance will take a considerable time. About 75 persons
were killed.
During October 18th visibility was bad over the country owing
to low cloud and mist and enemy activity was almost negligible
and confined to a Few reconnaissance Flights by single aircraft.
During the night of October 18th/19th activity was on a much
reduced scale, probably owing to weather conditions, and was
almost entirely confined to the early hours of darkness. About
160 enemy aircraft were plotted over the country of which approximately
80 operated in the London area and about 20 each in the Liverpool,
Manchester, Birmingham and Coventry areas. Damage, believed serious,
was caused to the factory of the Gramophone Company. No other
damage to factories was reported but in some of them production
is delayed owing to water shortage. At Birmingham 4 factories
are reported hit; the only serious damage reported was to one
coking
